How to Specify Readable, Durable Weight Plate Markings

Unbranded iron and rubber Olympic plates with clear 45 LB and 20 KG denomination marks

Quick answer: approve the denomination as a working feature

A weight mark is not complete because the artwork file looks correct. Define the denomination, unit, character height and stroke, relief or recess, contrast, orientation, clear space and viewing condition on the finished plate. Approve light, middle and heavy models because available face area and mold geometry can change across the range.

ChinaFreeWeight can review OEM, ODM, Custom Logo, Private Label and Bulk Supply projects as a factory. The marking method, tooling, color, packaging and inspection plan remain model-specific and must be confirmed on a production-representative sample.

Put weight and unit ahead of decorative branding

Users need to identify the load quickly on a rack, storage peg or bar. Build a hierarchy in which the denomination and KG or LB unit remain unambiguous before the logo, series name or decorative ring. A dual-unit layout needs enough separation to prevent one value being read with the wrong unit.

Current IWF and IPF rules require clear weight identification within their competition scopes, but they do not create a universal font, contrast ratio or life requirement for every commercial plate. A buyer should cite the applicable rule only when purchasing for that defined competition context.

Choose the marking process with the plate construction

Cast iron may use integral raised or recessed characters with a coating or paint fill. Rubber and urethane can use molded relief, recessed fill, inlaid elements or another model-specific process. Printed marks may allow flexible graphics but need an agreed substrate, surface preparation, cure and edge condition.

Do not rank methods by name alone. A raised character can wear at proud edges; a recess can collect dirt; paint can lose contrast; an insert can loosen if its construction is unsuitable. Record the actual material, geometry and process instead of assuming that molded, printed or engraved always means durable.

Approve the whole SKU family under realistic viewing

Review the smallest face, deepest hub, grip openings and any plate where the artwork must move. Check both faces, orientation around the bore, spacing from the rim and whether a storage peg or neighbouring plate hides the denomination. View samples upright, flat, racked and under the lighting expected in the facility.

Freeze a vector master, drawing revision, color reference and physical sample. Photograph the approved plate from fixed distances, but do not use photographs as the only color or relief standard. If the range mixes KG, LB or dual marks, use a controlled SKU matrix so packaging and replenishment cannot silently exchange variants.

Define durability evidence without inventing a lifetime

First describe the real contact: plate-to-plate rubbing, storage pegs, floors, hands, approved cleaners, transport dividers and sunlight where relevant. Then choose a comparison method and acceptance observation tied to the actual marking system. Record precondition, contact medium, force or load, motion, duration, cleaning agent and post-test viewing.

ASTM D4060 is an abrasion method for organic coatings, and ASTM D3359 addresses tape adhesion of coating films to metallic substrates within stated limitations. Neither supplies a universal free-weight cycle count or pass grade. Use a method only when its specimen and scope fit the offered construction, and keep the agreed limit in the buyer specification.

Inspect production and preserve reorder consistency

At first-piece and final inspection, compare denomination, unit, spelling, position, orientation, fill coverage, edge definition, relief condition, color and contrast with the approved references. Sample across weights, mold cavities, production periods and cartons. Reconcile the physical plate with carton labels and the purchase-order SKU.

Quarantine mixed units, unreadable characters, transferred paint, loose inlays or unapproved artwork. Changes to mold insert, pigment, paint, coating, cure, supplier, relief depth or cleaning instruction should trigger documented review. Keep a retained sample and revision record for later private-label reorders.

Send a marking brief that factories can quote consistently

List plate family, material, weight range, quantities by SKU, market, KG or LB system, required competition context if any, artwork, hierarchy, color, relief or recess, viewing condition, durability method, sample plan, packaging and acceptance rules. Separate denomination requirements from the brand logo.

Ask every supplier to state feasible processes, tooling boundary, sample route, inspection evidence and change-notification responsibilities. Price, order minimum and schedule depend on the actual range and method; confirm them for the project rather than treating one generic figure as a factory promise.

Weight plate marking FAQ

Are raised markings always more durable than paint fill?

No. Durability depends on material, relief geometry, coating or fill, contact and the chosen comparison method.

Should a plate show KG, LB or both?

Use the unit system expected by the market. A dual-unit layout must keep both values and units unmistakable.

Does competition color coding make a plate approved?

No. Color and markings are only parts of the applicable rules; approval and every other requirement remain separate.

Can one artwork size be used across every weight?

Not safely by assumption. Review the smallest face and every geometry change, then approve a range matrix.

How should paint-fill durability be tested?

Define the actual substrate, preparation, contact, cleaner or abrasive, exposure and acceptance observation; no universal cycle count applies.

What should receiving inspection check?

Check denomination, unit, position, orientation, contrast, fill, edge quality, damage, carton identity and agreement with the approved revision.

Can the factory add a custom logo beside the weight mark?

Yes on suitable models after the information hierarchy, artwork, tooling, sample, packaging and inspection plan are approved.
