Short answer: approve the finished product, not a screen color
A color code is a useful starting reference, but it does not prove how a dumbbell or plate will look after molding, coating, curing and surface finishing. Rubber, urethane, powder coat, printed ink and color fill can make the same target appear different because the substrate, texture and gloss change the reflected light.
Approve a production-equivalent physical sample under agreed viewing conditions. ChinaFreeWeight is a factory and can review OEM, ODM, Custom Logo, Private Label and Bulk Supply programs, but the approved color must be tied to the exact product, material, finish, artwork and revision rather than a digital mockup alone.
Treat color as a material-and-process specification
A coated iron plate, molded bumper plate, urethane dumbbell head and printed carton do not share one color recipe. Pigment behaves through each material and process, while mold texture, coating thickness, cure condition and gloss alter appearance. A buyer should therefore name the target separately for every product surface that must coordinate.
Pantone itself notes that physical results vary by manufacturer, substrate, finish and application method. ASTM D2244 covers calculations for instrumentally measured color differences and requires buyer and seller to agree the tolerance and calculation procedure. Neither source creates one universal pass limit for gym equipment.
Build one approval package for each visible surface
The brief should identify the current physical color reference, the product SKU, base material, finish family, texture, gloss intent, logo process, weight marking and viewing condition. Photographs help teams communicate location and layout, but camera exposure, white balance and screens make them unsuitable as the only master.
For a family of dumbbells or plates, choose representative light, middle and heavy items. Head size, wall thickness, compound batch, molded texture and marking area can change the visual balance. Approve the color beside the logo and weight marking so brand color never reduces basic product identification.
Separate brand colors from competition weight coding
Commercial ranges may use one brand color, a color family, or a different color for each weight. Competition products can fall under federation rules that assign colors within a defined scope. Current IWF and IPF rules should be checked for the exact product and event; those rules should not be generalized to every training plate.
Write a color map by SKU and market before sampling. If a brand color conflicts with a familiar weight code, keep the weight value prominent and decide whether the custom color belongs on the full body, a stripe, lettering, hub, end cap or packaging. Accessibility and rapid identification matter as much as brand impact.
Custom-color approval matrix
| Decision | What to define | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Market role | Brand color, weight code or decorative accent | SKU color map |
| Product surface | Rubber, urethane, paint, print, fill or packaging | Surface-specific brief |
| Target | Current physical reference and color system | Protected master |
| Appearance | Texture, gloss, metallic effect and viewing condition | Approved limit samples |
| Markings | Logo, KG or LB value, contrast and placement | Artwork revision |
| Measurement | Instrument setup, formula, locations and tolerance | Method record |
| Lot inspection | Sampling, comparison and defect disposition | Inspection report |
| Reorder control | Material, process and supplier change triggers | Revision history |
Compare samples with controlled viewing and measurement
Place the approved reference and trial close together, clean and oriented consistently. Use stable neutral illumination, a neutral surround and a repeatable angle that reduces glare. Record whether the decision is visual, instrumental or both. Gloss and texture should be checked separately because two samples with similar measured color can still look different.
If an instrument is used, record the device, geometry, illuminant, observer, aperture, measurement locations, averaging rule and color-difference formula. Do not copy a tolerance from another material. Correlate the proposed limit with visual acceptance on production-equivalent surfaces and retain accepted and rejected boundary samples when practical.
Inspect the lot without turning one sample into a guarantee
At incoming or pre-shipment inspection, verify product identity and revision before comparing color. Sample across cartons, production periods, weight sizes and both faces. Look for within-part variation, part-to-part drift, contamination, gloss patches, cure marks, print coverage and color transfer at contact points.
A single approved sample establishes a reference, not proof that every unit matches. The inspection plan must state sample selection, comparison method, defect categories and who decides borderline cases. Separate acceptable process texture from stains, exposed substrate, mixed shades or markings that reduce legibility.
Freeze color evidence for private-label reorders
Keep the signed product sample, current color reference, material and finish revision, approved artwork, measurement settings, photographs, inspection record and supplier change-notification rule. Store physical references away from light, heat, oil and abrasion, and replace a reference that has aged or been damaged.
Require review before changing pigment source, compound, substrate, mold texture, coating supplier, cure cycle, gloss target, printing ink or protective packaging. A reorder can use the same color name yet look different after any of these changes. The retained package gives distributor and factory a shared basis for comparison.

Ten checks before approving custom-color production
- Identify the market, product family and purpose of each color.
- Use a current physical reference rather than a screenshot alone.
- Name the material, surface, texture and intended gloss.
- Map every color to its exact SKU and weight marking.
- Check current competition rules only when that scope applies.
- Approve representative light, middle and heavy products.
- Record viewing conditions and any instrument settings.
- Define sampling and treatment of borderline variation.
- Retain approved products, artwork, photographs and records.
- Require reapproval after material or process changes.
Continue the private-label specification
- Compare custom logo methods
- Approve an OEM sample
- Control reorder consistency
- Review plate weight tolerance
- Browse commercial dumbbells
- Browse weight plates
- Plan OEM and private label
- Review factory controls
- Plan export packaging
- Send the color brief
Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Free-Weight Colors
Is a Pantone code enough to approve a dumbbell color?
No. It identifies a target, but the final material, texture, gloss and process affect appearance. Approve a production-equivalent physical sample.
Can one color tolerance cover rubber, urethane and powder coat?
Not responsibly by default. Each material and surface needs a correlated visual or instrumental acceptance method.
Should a color sample be approved from a photograph?
A photograph is useful for records, not as the only master. Camera, lighting and display settings can change the apparent color.
Do all weight plates have to follow competition colors?
No. Apply current federation rules only to products within that competition scope. Commercial training ranges can use another documented system.
What should a factory measure for color control?
Agree the instrument geometry, illuminant, observer, aperture, locations, averaging, formula and acceptance tolerance for the actual surface.
How should custom colors be checked in a bulk order?
Sample across cartons, production periods and representative SKUs, then compare color, gloss, texture, marking contrast and visible defects.
What should a private-label buyer keep for a reorder?
Keep the signed product, physical color reference, material and finish revisions, artwork, measurement method, photographs and change-control record.
