The quick answer: specify the loading job before the product name
Change plates and fractional plates both make smaller loading steps, but the names are not applied consistently across every market. A useful purchase specification states each marked denomination, the total increase when a pair is added, kg or lb, centre-bore interface, material, outside profile, retention behaviour and intended position on the bar. Do not approve a line from the words change plate or micro plate alone.
For a commercial gym, distributor or private-label brand, begin with the training programmes and bar systems that will use the plates. Then build the required pair increments, verify fit and mass on production-equivalent samples and define how the bulk lot will be checked. ChinaFreeWeight can review OEM, ODM, Custom Logo, Private Label and Bulk Supply requirements after the exact range and evidence are identified.
Change plate and fractional plate are purchasing categories, not universal constructions
In common market use, change plates cover small denominations used between the larger plates, while fractional or micro plates usually describe the lightest increments. Some suppliers overlap the terms. Products may use a coated steel core, a metal insert, an all-metal body or a frictional inner surface, and their outside diameters may stay constant or increase with mass.
The order sheet should therefore define the product family with measurable fields. Record the denomination on one plate, the pair addition, bore or grip interface, finished thickness, outside diameter, marking layout, color plan and permitted use. Keep competition references, ordinary training products and special record-loading plates as separate configurations instead of merging their labels into one assumed standard.
Calculate the pair increment and range around the real programme
Plates are normally loaded symmetrically, so purchasing teams should show both the mass of one plate and the change made by a pair. A facility that programs in kilograms should not quietly substitute a pound series, and a mixed-unit club needs an explicit storage and identification plan. List the smallest useful jump for presses, technique work and staged warm-ups, then check that larger combinations can be assembled without redundant SKUs.
Current IWF rules list specific competition disc denominations and colors for IWF events, while current IPF rules use a different disc range and provide lighter record plates for their own context. Those documents help buyers understand why discipline and purpose matter; they do not make every commercial small plate approved equipment or establish one universal retail assortment.
Control bore fit, friction and position relative to the collar
An Olympic label does not fully describe fit. State the finished bore or friction interface, measuring method and compatible sleeve family. The sample should slide or grip as intended without tearing the coating, binding unexpectedly or moving in a way that conflicts with the operating instruction. Check both new and conditioned samples if the selected material is expected to bed in.
Some competition workflows place selected light plates outside a collar and rely on a designed friction fit; many commercial training setups keep plates inside an ordinary collar. The RFQ must state which arrangement is intended. Never copy an outside-collar use claim to a different bore, material or surface merely because the plate has the same color.
Eight fields to compare before approving a small-plate range
| Field | Define in the RFQ | Verify on the sample |
|---|---|---|
| Range | Denominations and pair increments | Every marked SKU is present |
| Unit | Separate kg or lb system | Mark and carton agree |
| Mass | Model-specific deviation and pair rule | Suitable recorded weighing |
| Interface | Bore, friction and sleeve family | Fit on the intended bar |
| Profile | Diameter, thickness and edge | Dimensions and safe handling |
| Material | Core, coating and contact surface | Construction and finish match |
| Marking | Mass, unit, color and artwork | Legibility and orientation |
| Pack | Pair separation and carton identity | No movement or surface transfer |
Treat small-plate mass and pair matching as their own acceptance decision
A small absolute difference can be meaningful when the marked denomination itself is small. Define the permitted deviation for the exact model, whether the rule applies to each plate or to a matched pair, and how the result will be rounded. Do not advertise a plate as calibrated unless the evidence, method and product scope support that description.
Use a scale with suitable capacity, resolution, verification status and repeatability for the decision. Identify the plate, let the reading stabilize and record individual results rather than only a pass mark. The scale used for large bumper plates may be too coarse for a light fractional line, while a small tabletop scale may lack capacity for the rest of the range.
Approve material, marking and color as a connected system
Coated steel, rubber over a core and other constructions feel different on the sleeve and respond differently to edge impact, storage contact and cleaning. Specify the body and insert materials, edge condition, coating coverage, permitted seams, surface transfer and care instructions. A color name alone does not define compound, finish or durability.
Every plate needs a legible denomination and unit. Review contrast, orientation and whether the marking remains visible when plates are stored or nested. If competition colors are requested, cite the intended rule and edition. Custom artwork must not hide the mass, unit, traceability or friction area, and a change in logo relief or coating can affect final mass.
Plan pairs, spare stock and storage before ordering the set
A useful commercial assortment is driven by simultaneous users and programmed jumps, not by a photograph of a complete rainbow. Map each session type to the pairs required at one time, distinguish platform stock from member micro plates and decide whether very light items are controlled by coaches, kept at each rack or sold as personal accessories.
Count pairs rather than loose pieces, then decide which denominations need replacements. Small plates are easy to misplace, mix between kg and lb zones or load asymmetrically. Storage pegs, trays or labeled compartments should fit the actual bore, outside diameter and plate count without squeezing soft coatings or obscuring the unit.
Inspect the full SKU family, not only one attractive sample
Approve representative plates from the light, middle and upper end of the proposed small-plate range. Verify identity, individual mass, pair matching, bore fit, thickness, outside profile, flatness, edge finish, coating, color, markings and stacking. Check the intended bar and collar arrangement physically, because separate measurements do not reveal every interaction.
For bulk receiving, spread the sample across denominations, cartons and production periods according to the agreed plan. Record each result against the SKU and lot, quarantine unexplained substitutions and define the response to an isolated failure or a repeated pattern. Packaging must prevent dense plates from rubbing, escaping small compartments or transferring color during export.
Freeze OEM and private-label decisions in one controlled approval
An OEM project may apply a new logo, color, denomination layout or carton to an established construction. ODM work can change the bore, material, diameter, thickness, grip behaviour or range. Either route needs a production-equivalent sample and a revision record that ties product, artwork, weight table, inspection method and packaging together.
As a factory, ChinaFreeWeight can review manufacture and sourcing requirements for custom small-plate ranges, but the proposal remains model-specific. Send the target market, kg or lb system, denominations, quantities by SKU, bars and collars, intended use, marking files, packing route and required evidence. Price, MOQ and lead time are confirmed only after that configuration is understood.

Change plates and fractional plates FAQ
What is the difference between change plates and fractional plates?
Both provide smaller loading steps. Fractional plates usually describe the lightest increments, while change plates often continue into larger small denominations, but market naming overlaps. Specify the complete range instead of relying on the label.
Why must the increment be calculated by pair?
One plate is normally added to each side of the bar. The training load therefore changes by the combined mass of the pair, which should be shown on the range plan.
Do all small plates fit every Olympic bar?
No. Confirm the finished bore or friction interface, sleeve dimensions, coating condition and intended position relative to the collar on the exact bar system.
Are competition colors proof of competition approval?
No. Color helps identification but does not prove mass, dimensions, certification or approval. Cite the relevant rule and verify the exact product evidence when competition use matters.
How should fractional plates be weighed?
Use suitable equipment with enough capacity and resolution, record individual stabilized readings and apply the agreed model-specific deviation and pair rule.
Can a factory add a custom logo?
For suitable models, yes. Approve the artwork, mass and unit visibility, relief or print method, final mass, friction area and packaging on a production-equivalent sample.
What should a bulk RFQ include?
Send the units, denominations, quantity by SKU, pair increments, bars, collars, intended use, fit and mass criteria, color and logo files, packaging, destination and required inspection evidence.
